RCAA member John Barrie is traveling to Guatemala to install solar power and water filters on the homes of families having babies and families with very young children. The region of Guatemala where John will be working is “beyond the last mile”, where tools and equipment must be carried by hand through the mountains to get to the families. The families John works with have never received government, nonprofit, or any sort of aid. They cook over wood fires and use oil lamps to see at night. Providing solar LED lights and a cell phone charger takes a family out of the Middle Ages and into the 21st century. This program, Mayan Power and Light, was created by a Rotary grant in 2015. Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors have all participated in volunteer projects with Mayan Power and Light. John is a member of our International Humanitarian Projects Committee and our Environmental Action Group.
