Rotary has funded this Children’s Literacy Network project through both a CAC and a District Grant and CLN needs volunteers in 1.5 hour shifts throughout the school year — up to 40 in total. Below is the formal description of BookPals, but it is an easy commitment, working with 2nd and 3rd graders in small reading groups on Zoom. They get free books and read to each other with the encouragement of the volunteers. Contact latoya@childrensliteracynetwork.org for all the details!
An innovative program built on the well-known concept of “Pen Pals,” which employs a peer-assisted learning model to generate excitement around reading, build practice reading time and build bridges between students from varied communities and backgrounds. This year BookPALS will reach children from Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, and Dexter schools. Children get a “PAL” to read with and learn from. The goal is to develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through activities of the program.
