Salk Polio Vaccine Announcement makes it to Final Jeopardy!

The Final Jeopardy answer in the episode on April 23 related to the announcement of the Salk vaccine and the significance of the date of April 12, 1955. Two of the contestants, including ultimate winner Jamie Ding, responded with the correct question.

As many nearby Rotarians know, the announcement that the vaccine was “safe, effective, and potent” was made in the Rackham Auditorium on the U-M campus. The other fact from the Jeopardy answer that is not so well-known is that the date was chosen to be the tenth anniversary of the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. FDR was an initial supporter of the search for a vaccine through an effort that became the “March of Dimes.”
