On a beautiful summer day during the final week before students returned, the meeting opened with “America the Beautiful,” accompanied by Rick Ingram. Victor Stoeffler then emphasized the importance of supporting children’s needs, including having their own clothing and the opportunity to choose items they like. Song leader Ingrid followed by leading the group in the old favorite “The Happy Wanderer.”

Victor Stoeffler, a longtime supporter and volunteer with Michigan Foster Care Closet (MFCC), introduced President Karen Field and Director Jenny Sharp. Karen thanked Victor for his years of dedicated service to the organization.
Karen began by describing MFCC’s identity, mission, and work. Founded in 2017, MFCC is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides children of all ages in foster care with quality essentials for daily life.
Based in Washtenaw County, MFCC serves foster children and families across Michigan from a 3,600-square-foot, barrier-free commercial space. There, foster youth, families, and caseworkers receive a professional, personalized shopping experience.
MFCC often hears from families welcoming foster children who arrive with little more than the clothes they are wearing. At no cost, the organization provides clothing, shoes, toys, linens, nursery furniture, strollers, car seats, school supplies, hygiene products, safety equipment, and other essentials. Its goal is to help every child who enters feel confident and valued.
Any child or youth in Michigan foster care may shop for free items up to four times a year. Those adopted from foster care remain eligible for one year after adoption, while youth transitioning out of care may shop for up to 12 months after aging out or their case closes. Emergency placements can be served within 24 hours.
In addition to choosing clothing, each child may select two toys from the toy shelves. Throughout the year, the shop also hosts family events, including an Easter egg hunt, a back-to-school event, Halloween activities, and a Breakfast with Santa holiday party.
MFCC’s success depends on dedicated volunteers who collect, sort, and distribute age-appropriate clothing so every child can feel their best.
