Bryant, Barbara Everitt 4/5/1926 – 3/3/2023 Ann Arbor. Barbara Everitt Bryant died March 3, 2023 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, of natural causes. Dr. Bryant served as Director of the U.S. Bureau of the Census from 1989 to 1993, the first woman to have done so. She graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Physics in 1947. Later, while raising three children, she attended Michigan State University, receiving a Masters in Journalism (1967) and a PhD in Communications (1970). She then embarked on a 38-year career in survey research, starting with 20 years at Market Opinion Research (now Escalent). She was a faculty member in the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan from 1993 until retiring at age 82 in 2008. She was married to John H. Bryant for 49 years until his death in 1997. She is survived by three children: Linda Bryant Valentine of Louisville, Kentucky, Randal Everitt Bryant of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Lois Beth Bryant of Ann Arbor, Michigan, as well as eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 1 at the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, MI. Throughout her demanding career, Barbara Bryant volunteered in community and church, entertained guests, and organized and participated in family vacations and gatherings. She inspired her children and grandchildren, as well as the many other people in her life.

Barbara was presented with the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award in 2011, she was a member of the Sustainer’s Society and became an Emeritus member in 2016.
