Did you know….

…that Mary Avrakotos was born in Egypt and has lived in Syria, South Africa, Burma (Myanmar), and what was Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia? The daughter of a Foreign Service Officer, she attended high school in Paris for three years and Holland for one year.

After graduating from NYU, she worked at the Museum of African Art in Washington, DC, and later the Textile Museum.

In addition to Rotary, her interests include movies and ceramics. She is a member of the Michigan Theater and the Ann Arbor Potters Guild. Her museum work informs her work with clay. She uses her amazing collection of raffia pile cloths from Zaire as source material for designs that adorn the small vessels she creates.

Mary has served as the chair of our International Humanitarian Projects Committee, and is still a very active member of the committee. In that capacity, she continues to actively support the efforts of a Paramount Chief in Sierra Leone to improve the lives of the 40,000 people in his Chiefdom.
