April 17 Speaker: John Hiner - “Local journalism in the age of TikTok, misinformation and AI”

Newspapers lost their dominance in America more than 20 years ago. Information comes at us from all directions, molded by Big Tech, shaped to our tastes and our behavior online, and delivered to the device stuck to our hand. Still our communities need, and our citizens depend on, factual, verified information. Though the economics have changed, long-established local news media companies keep reinventing themselves to deliver journalism and try to make enough money to survive. MLive Media Group President John Hiner, a lifelong journalist, will explain how The Ann Arbor News and its sister “newspapers” have stayed relevant in this dynamic digital landscape.

Our speaker will be John Hiner. He is president of MLive Media Group, the most-read news company in Michigan. John has worked more than 40 years in news media in Michigan, including 38 years with Advance Local, which owns MLive Media Group. Prior to executive leadership roles with MLive, he was executive editor of The Flint Journal, Saginaw News and The Bay City Times; editor at The Bay City Times; and a reporter and assistant editor at The Jackson Citizen Patriot. He graduated from Adrian College and lives in Saline.

John was also a long-time (almost 20 years) Rotarian in Bay City so we might ask him to lead us in the recitation of the Four-way test at the end of the meeting. 🙂
