Weekly Wednesday Zoom Meeting: Veteran's Program: Impact of Covid -19 on Michigan and Michigan National Guard

Col (Dr.) Kevin Bohnsack is the State Air Surgeon for the Michigan Air National Guard.
After attending Albion College, he completed medical training at Northwestern
University and family medicine residency in his hometown of Marquette. After 10 years
of active duty service around the globe including deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq,
he returned to Michigan where he is a family physician with IHA Milan Primary Care. He
also serves as the medical director for the Southeast Michigan Clinically Integrated
Network with Trinity Health Michigan.

In his military role, Col Bohnsack has been a medical advisor to the whole-of-
government response for several lines of effort related to the COVID-19 pandemic. He
will share experiences related to various missions such as COVID-19 testing, alternate
care facility and other military activities around the state, nation and world. He will also
share principles of leadership and lessons learned over his many years of service and
how they have influenced his life and fellow service members.

Colonel Kevin J. Bohnsack is the State Air Surgeon for the Michigan Air National Guard,
Joint Force Headquarters, Lansing, Michigan. He oversees the medical qualifications,
accessions and fitness for duty determinations of over 2,200 personnel statewide. Col
Bohnsack is a key medical advisor for Homeland Response and medical support to
civilian authorities, the State Partnership Programs in Latvia and Liberia and the annual
joint exercise, Operation Northern Strike, held in Michigan every summer.
He is a graduate of the Residency in Aerospace Medicine (RAM) at the USAF School of
Aerospace Medicine in San Antonio, TX. Col Bohnsack initially served as a squadron
flight surgeon for the Flying Tigers in Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Iraq during initial combat
operations. Since that time, he has served locations in Europe, Central and Southwest
Asia and CONUS. Prior to his current position, he was the commander of the 110th
Medical Group in Battle Creek for four years during major mission set changes that
continue to support ongoing contingency operations in a complex, multi-domain
environment.

Col Bohnsack’s work also includes humanitarian missions in and around Bagram,
Afghanistan in 2002, the city of Tamale, Ghana for MEDFLAG 2006 and Kauai for
Tropic Care 2012. He is a human factors expert and flight safety advisor with over 400
hours as a flight surgeon in over ten different military aircraft.
