The Power of Rotary’s Youth Leadership Development Outreach

Goeff Burns, our speaker on August 28, attended the 2006 Life Leadership Conference sponsored by Rotary District 6920. Beginning in 1949, it is the longest continually running Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program in the Rotary world. The Conference is held at the Kettunen Center in Tustin, Michigan, a small wooded campus designed especially for leadership training. Coming from large cities and crossroads communities alike in Michigan and Ontario, participants meet and interface with other young men and women who have proven leadership skills. The agenda includes motivational and thought provoking speakers. Discussion groups explore the intellectual, ethical and emotional aspects of leadership. Geoff credits the Conference with honing “ the skills and confidence I needed to lead teams[.]” He “first [put] those skills to use [on] my high school cross country teams, leading the squad as a captain in both my junior and senior years.”
