Rotarians in the News: Best Buddies International

On Friday, November 8 Rotarians Karen Driggs and Ebru Misirli Mansfield joined Sally Petersen at the Michigan Chapter of Best Buddies International inaugural gala at the Gem Theater in Detroit. The gala was to celebrate the successful fundraising activities of 13 local Champions. Our own Sally Petersen was one of those Champions!

Best Buddies is the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Their Programs empower the special abilities of people with IDD by helping them form meaningful friendships with their peers, secure successful jobs, live independently and feel valued by society.

Sally’s commitment to community service stems in large part to her experience growing up with her developmentally disabled sister Betsy. As Sally has grown older, Betsy has become more and more a part of her daily life. When Sally visits Betsy in Massachusetts, the sisters’ favorite activities include shopping, eating out, visiting local sites and laughing together. Sally learned about Best Buddies two years ago and decided to host a fundraising event to establish the Michigan Chapter which is now a reality. Now that is really “Service Above Self!”
