Big Things Happening in Community Service

The following are highlights from November 2019 as reported by our Director of Community Service, Peg Talburtt.

*Big news! The new Co-Chairs of the 2020 Golf and Tennis Outing event are Charlie Koopmann and Greg Stejskal. The Committee has determined that the 2020 event will be moved to Fox Hills Golf & Banquet Center on N. Territorial Rd (near the Gotfredson Rd exit off M14) and it will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2020. This change was made due to significantly increased costs at Travis Pointe. The Committee considered a variety of options and felt that this choice will keep our profits up, make the event easier to stage, and improve many aspects of the evening.

Corporate solicitations have begun as we know that many 2020 budgets are finalized in December 2019. A wonderful guest speaker has tentatively signed on. The vast majority of last year’s committee continues for another year of leadership which should make the event even better.

*The Hire MI Vets event, chaired by Don Deatrick, was held November 5 and was a spectacular success. Since it began in 2015, the number of employers involved has increased by almost 60% and the number of job follow up interview offers by 40%. This year, 71 Vets participated and 14 had job interviews scheduled that day. Our improved economy means that fewer vets need new jobs. Nonetheless, one outside estimate computes that since 2015, more than $2,000,000.00 has been earned by the Vets helped by this program. Next year’s event will be held on November 16, 2020 at WCC.

*The Rotary Fighting Hunger Committee, chaired by Todd Kephart, has its first meeting next month. The dates for the 2020 Campaign have been established. The Food Drive will be held between March 9-20, 2020.

*The Community Allocations Committee, co-chaired by Rick Price & Carolina Typaldos, has held its first full meeting and an orientation for all new members. They are completing a new Manual to describe all forms, procedures, and timelines. The electronic application will drop on January 2, 2020. Applications will be due February 22, 2020and the CAC will send its recommendations to the Board for approval on April 15, 2020. Selected current grantees will be speaking to the membership on December 11, January 8, and January 22, 2020.
