In a recent speech at the District 6380 Mental Health and Wellness – Anti-Stigma Symposium, Collyer Smith shared his experiences as a parent dealing with a child with mental illness. During his speech, Collyer told us about the events and experiences that he and his wife had with their son Cam.
From the first discovery of Cam’s mental illness, through the ups and downs of rehab, and finally Cam’s tragic death, Collyer lead us on a path that lead us to his calling us to action about the stigma of mental illness. His call to us was that we need to do more to bring the problem of mental illness to the forefront. By creating awareness of these issues & sharing his family’s experiences with us, he is attaining his goal of getting rid of the stigma associated with mental illness. I want to extend a personal thank you to Collyer for sharing his experience with us and making us more aware of this important issue.
